The pivotal role of Messiaen’s quartet for the end of time in the establishment of the clarinet-piano quartet genre

Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time played a pivotal role in the development of the clarinet-piano quartet genre. Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time and the subsequent rise of the clarinet-piano quartet genre exemplify a modernist shift in genre identity in twentieth century chamber music. Contributing factors to this identity include the success of professional quartets in performing, promoting, and expanding the repertoire, the quality of work within the genre, and the ability of ensembles who promote this genre to sustain themselves in a changing socioeconomic environment. In this study I examine the different factors of genre identity that relate to the clarinet-piano quartet. These factors include: the problem of genre identity in the twentieth century; a historical account of the development of the clarinet-piano quartet genre from the first performance of Quartet for the End of Time through the work of current professional ensembles; the quality of literature for this genre, represented by the analysis of Toru Takemitsu's Quatrain (1978) and Paul Moravec's Tempest Fantasy (2002); and how this new genre meets the social and economic demands of the current information age. The appendices provided with this study are reference tools designed to help musicians discover works within this genre, and to collect the available literature in one location. They include an annotated list of influential or most recently published quartets, a complete list of all clarinet-piano quartets arranged by composition date, and a list of commissioned quartets organized by their commissioning ensemble

Les médecins dans le Centre-Ouest au Moyen Age (XIIIe-XVe siècle)

Cet article en hommage à Odile Redon est une version resserrée d'une conférence donnée à Poitiers en juin 1999 à la Société des Antiquaires de l'Ouest, et publiée ensuite dans le Bulletin de la Société des Antiquaires de l'Ouest.The geographical frame of this survey is a large West central region, and the history of the medical practitioners of this region is approached here by means of the prosopography. To establish the list proposed in appendix we leaned on various published works on some documents kept in the Departmental archives of Vienne. Barbers and surgeons are presented separately, according to the terms which qualify them in medieval sources, although the distinction between both in our region has nothing clear-cut in the Middle Ages; on the other hand, we have listed among doctors the individuals known to have followed the studies of medicine but of whom nothing proves that they exercised her. A crowd of characters appears, about whom we can glean diverse information. We have tried to order them by presenting successively the various types of practitioners, the rise and assertion of a university medicine, the frames where the doctors exercised, and finally the relationships between practitioners and cities.Le cadre géographique de cette enquête est large Centre-Ouest, et l'histoire des praticiens de cette région est abordée ici par le biais de la prosopographie. Pour en établir la liste donnée en annexe on s'est s'appuyé sur différents travaux publiés ainsi que sur quelques documents conservés aux Archives Départementales de la Vienne. Barbiers et chirurgiens y sont présentés séparément, selon les termes qui les désignent dans les sources, bien que la distinction entre les deux dans notre région n'ait rien de tranché au Moyen Age ; sont rangés en revanche parmi les médecins des individus connus pour avoir suivi des études de médecine mais dont rien ne prouve qu'ils l'ont exercée. Apparaît ainsi une foule de personnages sur lesquels on peut glaner des renseignements divers ; on a tâché de les ordonner en présentant tour à tour les différents types de praticiens, l'affirmation d'une médecine universitaire, les cadres où les médecins exercèrent, et enfin les rapports entre praticiens et villes

Fond Fathers, Devoted Daughters? Family Sentiment in Seventeenth-Century France

This article argues that we should study the history of family sentiment through a method of close reading that attends sharply to the particularities of cultural context. As a demonstration it takes the ''difficult'' case of the relationships between fathers and daughters in early modern France. Careful analysis, albeit from a slim array of documents allows us to contend that from the middle of the seventeenth century, among men and women of affluent, but not courtly elites, new habits of experiencing and expressing feelings were emerging within the family. This new style of sentiment drew upon parallel developments in the rhetoric of emotion in the spheres of religion and secular literature. Cet article soutient que nous devrions étudier l’histoire du sentiment familial selon une méthode de lecture attentive qui s’applique en profondeur aux particularités du contexte culturel. A preuve ce cas « difficile » des relations entre pères et filles au début de la France moderne. Une analyse soigneuse, mais d’une documentation limitée, nous permet d’affirmer qu’à partir du milieu du XVIIe s., de nouvelles habitudes d’expériences et d’expressions des sentiments entre hommes et femmes des élites nobles ou bourgeoises, à l’exclusion de celles de la cour, commençaient à se manifester dans la famille. Ce changement de mentalités entraîna des développements parallèles dans l’expression des sentiments, dans les domaines de la religion et de la littérature profane

Awakening Imagination: Glimpses of Ignatian Spirituality in Seventeenth-Century French Hagiographic Theatre

The Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556) propose an active method of exercising spirituality through meditation, prayer, and imaginative contemplation. Beyond mere spectators, Ignatian disciples are invited to become actors in the scene unfolding in their sensory imaginations, in what Barthes calls the “récit christique” (Barthes 1971, 10). In that sense, the Exercises possess a performative force. The implicit freedom inspired in the exercitant, the person who performs the Exercises, echoes the call to the imagination of the spectator of seventeenth-century French hagiographic drama. Exercises promulgated throughout the four weeks of the spiritual retreat are reflected in the development of the protagonists of some of these hagiographic plays. Our aim is to investigate how the spirit of the Exercises may be present in the conception of the hagiographic corpus. Specifically, we explore these plays for the presence of the suggestion of Ignatian spirituality and practices included in the Spiritual Exercises. Notably, we investigate the prevalence of repetition in Le Véritable Saint Genest (1647) by Jean Rotrou. We also draw attention to the ideas of spiritual and material detachment promulgated in the Exercises and address how they are expressed and lived out by hagiographic protagonists, specifically in Desfontaines’s Le Martyre de Saint Eustache (1643) and L’Illustre Olympie (1645). Finally, we address how a form analogous to imaginative contemplation may have inspired hagiographic spectators to supplement missing visual clues on stage and to become directors of their own internal and personal plays, much like the retreatant in the Exercises, with the ultimate purpose of transformation and a call to action in daily life
